Interest is of great importance for learning motivation and study or career choices. This paper gives a summary of the state of research on interest in general and in science specifically and describes an adaption of John L. Hollands “RIASEC-model” for the characterization of interest in science. Building up on this theoretical
background, an overview about fostering measures in school and beyond is given.
