In this contribution, we introduce a just starting panel study on teacher students (PaLea). The goal of this panel is to investigate teacher students' professional development under the conditions of recent reforms by the Bologna Process. In this context we, firstly, analyse study structures at a selection of universities. Secondly, a survey will provide data on how students use the local learning opportunities and how this shapes their professional development. The study will answer these questions through a three-year panel at thirteen selected universities. This paper provides an overview of the research questions and the design of the study and will elaborate the contribution of the panel to the current state of research in teacher education.
